Helping young children make the most of their educational adventure

It is always a great excitement to welcome visitors to Belhaven. This is a home with classrooms as opposed to a school with dormitories. It is a place that cares for over 50 per cent of Scotland’s prep school age boarders, as well as a growing contingent of day pupils following the creation of our now full Pre-Prep in 2022.

Everyone benefits from the boarding school ethos: a seemingly endless selection of activities and sports that fit snugly around an ambitious yet encouraging curriculum.

As a non-selective school, our focus is on providing the right level of support for every child so that, in small classes and with a superb Learning Support department, we support and challenge as appropriate.

In our 100th year, we are delighted that all of the top year passed their Common Entrance exams to their first-choice senior school and that there were 19 scholarship awards won. Most of all, we are proud of who the children at Belhaven are: fiercely and proudly themselves.

Belhaven’s location on the East Lothian coastline is key to our educational offering. Where else might you spend one lesson on the beach, the next in the woods and a third in the hills, all before breaktime? Where else can you board on a fortnightly basis in a co-ed prep school within 40 minutes of a capital city?

A wide variety of real-life experience is the cornerstone of a successful education and having the time and the space to make friends and live with them, to make mistakes and learn from them, makes for a very special environment in this small family school.

Understanding the needs of every child in our small classes (max. 16) is a hallmark of our offering at Belhaven. It is the ability to be heard that makes the difference to a child, and we look to provide the tools to magnify that voice, to give agency to ambition, energy to enthusiasm.

The Care Inspectorate’s rating of “Excellent” is not easily gained and having achieved it we must continue to deliver what they described as “sector-leading pastoral care” and to be innovative in our approach at the same time as offering value for money to parents.

What is most exciting is the willingness of the staff to go that extra mile to ensure that Belhaven’s children continue to relish their educational adventure.

You are welcome to our Open Event on the weekend of 7 and 8 October. It will involve a fun circus of activities on Saturday morning with the exciting option of a boarding taster that afternoon and overnight for those that are interested
